Project Description
This project was part of the City of Bellingham’s annual program to replace aging water supply infrastructure. RH2 designed improvements that replaced approximately 4,000 linear feet of water main, 1,800 linear feet of 48-inch corrugated metal stormwater pipe, and 1,300 linear feet of sewer main.
The stormwater system, originally installed in 1984, conveyed Fever Creek to Whatcom Creek. RH2 rehabilitated the system’s inlet and outlet to improve fish passage and enhance habitat. The 8-inch concrete sewer main, dating back to the 1930s, had reached the end of its useful life; RH2 and the City chose to replace it due to its shallow depth and conflict with the stormwater system.
In addition to utility replacements, the project upgraded ADA facilities, filled in missing sidewalk segments, and resurfaced the roadway with new asphalt. These combined improvements modernized critical infrastructure, enhanced pedestrian accessibility, and extended the service life of Valencia Street for decades to come.
Key Improvements:
- Replaced 4,000 LF of water main, 1,800 LF of stormwater main, and 1,300 LF of sewer main.
- Rehabilitated stormwater inlet/outlet for better fish passage and habitat.
- Replaced 1930s-era sewer main conflicting with new systems.
- Upgraded ADA facilities and completed sidewalk connections.
- Resurfaced roadway with durable asphalt.
